Bastion Debate in Upper House

Sue Pennicuik from the Greens put a motion to the Upper House yesterday calling on members to express concern at the granting of  Coastal Management Act (CMA) consent for the breakwater and beach road at Bastion Point. The Motion also calls for the Minister for Environment to explain his decision, particularly to the community in East Gippsland.

See Hansard p. 46-61  for the full transcript.

Gavin Jennings MLC for the ALP supported the motion, saying there was a ‘credibility problem’ in the decision that was made by Minister Ryan Smith on Coastal Management Act approval.

The motion is still open for voting as time ran out, so the vote will occur at the next session of Parliament in August.

Philip Davis, Liberal MLC for Eastern Victoria did not support the motion, and claimed the only community that was dissapointed about the Option 3b breakwater and beach road were cafe-sitters in Brunswick St.
