Government Gives Council An Ultimatum

East Gippsland Shire Council has been advised by the State Government to decide by the end of 2012 its intentions for Bastion Point. Read our Media Release 13 August 2012, where we call on the Council to listen to the community, and heed the two consultation periods in which 87% of submissions rejected the large Option 3b breakwater and beach road development.

See Where is the decision making process up to? for a summary of the letter to East Gippsland Shire Council from Minister for Ports Denis Napthine, on 3 August 2012. The Minister advises that if Council wishes to proceed with Option 3b, it must formally apply for Coastal Management Act consent.

If this application is unsuccessful or if Council withdraws it, the Government will consider an alternate development proposal. Funds of up to $6.2million are currently set aside for the project, but these monies may only be available until the end of 2012.
